Authentic Engagement
The Role of the Church in Social Transformation
By Dieumeme Noëlliste
Though called to partner in God’s holy work of transformation, the church has often responded with resignation rather than hope in the face of a broken, hurting, and violent world.
In Authentic Engagement, Dieumeme and Mirlenda Noëlliste remind us that the church was never meant to content itself with faith in the hereafter. However, to fulfill its God-given role in society, it must know what and whose it is, and situate itself accordingly. The authors explore questions of ecclesiology and establish the theological foundations for social engagement as they examine what it means to be a people defined by relationship with the triune God. Arguing that the church has a mandate to see the world transformed, they suggest a model of engagement that would empower believers to act as agents of transformation in all realms of society, while remaining deeply rooted in their calling as ambassadors of a heavenly kingdom.
This book brings hope and conviction in equal measures as it reawakens the church to a consciousness of its identity, its calling, and its powerful potential to bring change in the here and now

Book by this author :

Throughout the ages, religion has always been an essential element in the quest to understand the life of the human being, his aspirations, his history, his community, his culture and his destiny. In order to facilitate this understanding of the other, it is useful to observe his cultural modalities and to question the foundations of his beliefs. All this helps to establish a dialogue. This is the whole objective of this work. It traces the origins of certain Afro-Caribbean religions and provides a descriptive and comparative analysis of their beliefs and those of the Christian faith (understood here as the set of master beliefs anchored in the Holy Scriptures which form the essence of Christian conviction and orthodoxy). Using Paul's approach with the Athenians during his evangelical missionary journey, the authors invite us to learn about Afro-Caribbean religions in order to better understand them and to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ with courage and grace. This book is intended for any reader wishing to better understand Afro-Caribbean religions and how they are similar to or different from the Christian faithtext
As the twentieth century passed its midpoint and was rushing toward its end, a growing number of Majority World theologians came to realize that they could in fact do theology in their own contexts for the benefit of their own people. Thus, from the 1960s onward, theologians in the global South have embarked on a form of theological construction that has sometimes been described as "contextual" reflection or "contextualized theology." This volume is motivated by the conviction that these efforts have resulted in theological work that is also beneficial for Christians in other parts of the world. The editors have invited Majority World theologians to share their reflections on several themes of Christian faith from their own sociohistorical perspectives but with an unswerving commitment to the authority of Scripture. It is hoped that these fresh reflections will help Christians in the West engage and benefit from the perspectives of fellow believers in the global South.
